…travel update and “emergency” phone numbers you can use to reach us!

We made it to South Carolina safe and sound.  We are tired but enjoying time with family.

We found out yesterday afternoon that we are going to need to get our car in to be worked on before we can travel north in it.  A month ago, the tire was impaled by a broken spring on one of the front wheels (something like that anyway).  My sister had the car repaired but didn’t have the spring on the other side fixed.  We have been advised that the other side needs repaired for safety reasons.  It is in the shop today.  Please pray that the repair goes well and it is done so we can leave Sunday morning.

If you need to get in touch with us on a more urgent matter, you may try the following phone numbers.  We will be getting a Straight Talk telephone number some time early next week.  We will post that number when we get it.  For now, here is where we will be staying:

May 30-June 2:

Melissa McDaniel (Mindy’s sister)    843.499.1125

Tammy O’Sullivan  (Mindy’s sister)  843.851.4125

June 2-June 3:

Chuck and Ruth Myers (Tim’s sister)       828.455.8134

We will try to put up a regular update/post some time next week.  Have a great weekend everyone!

…reflecting on the past but looking forward to the future!

We have titled this post Reflecting on the Past but Looking Forward to the Future.  As we look back over the last several months, we are amazed at how far God has brought us in such a small amount of time.  By His goodness and grace we have accomplished much here at the ALCC, met a LOT of awesome people, made a lot of progress on establishing normalcy of everyday life, and came to understand a little more of how God sovereignly guides and directs those in service to Him.  We feel blessed beyond words and are so excited to see what God has in store for us here when we return from the states.  We admit that this is not a good time to be returning to the states, but that was not clear when we planned this return trip last fall.  We are resting on the fact that God makes no mistakes.  He will work things out.  One of the biggest lessons we have learned is total reliance and trust in the Lord.  He is faithful in everything.  Our faith has indeed been strengthened.

Going back to the United States so soon?  You just got here.

Because we have sensed some confusion from a few people about why we are heading back to the USA so soon after arriving in the Bahamas, we feel compelled to clarify the purpose for our trip.  First of all, it is not a vacation.  In January when we arrived in the Bahamas, we had not yet received permanent residency status from the Bahamian government, and therefore we had to show the Bahamian government that we had return tickets to the US.  We had chosen May 30th as the date to return because we had a nephew graduating at that time.  Not only are we going to be attending our nephew’s graduation, but we will also be taking the opportunity to get our vehicle, which is being stored at a sister’s house in South Carolina, back up to Wisconsin where it is licensed and insured.  Along the way, we will be taking the opportunity to meet a newborn family member in North Carolina, reconnecting with our home/sending church in Wisconsin, and seeing our children in Wisconsin and Minnesota.  Tim will be returning to the island from Minneapolis, MN on Tuesday, June 11th.  Mindy and the boys (including Garrett who will be coming for a 2 week visit) will return to the island on July 3rd.  Mindy and the boys will be sharing our ministry work and the ALCC ministry with a couple of churches in mid-June before ending the month with a week spent at Living Waters Bible Camp (boys will be campers and Mindy will serve as camp nurse).  We will also be seeing both sets of parents and our sisters and their families.

Please pray for us as we travel, make connections with supporters and family/friends, seek to raise more support, and connect with a couple churches about possible mission groups coming to ALCC.  Please also pray for Tim as he heads back on June 11th to get ready for summer mission teams coming to camp starting June 22nd.  We are trying to get a lot done now so he doesn’t have as much to do on his own when he returns.

Mindy’s knee

Thank you to all of you who have inquired about and prayed for Mindy’s knee injury.  She saw an orthopedic doctor on Wednesday.  The doctor believes she has a torn medial meniscus in her left knee.  She is scheduled to have an MRI this next week to confirm the diagnosis.  Please pray the MRI machine is repaired (it is broken right now and waiting for a replacement part) and that the insurance company approves the procedure.  Treatment has not been established yet (trying to remember that in the Bahamas, everything takes a while).

Thank you, Thursday morning Bible study ladies, for helping to make my first months in The Bahamas feel "normal". I have so enjoyed getting to know all of you. I can't wait until the fall when the Bible study starts back up again.

Believe it or not, there were events these last two weeks that we did not take our camera to.  The day before Mother’s Day, Mindy joined the Kingdom Life Church ladies at their Lady’s Luncheon, and this past Sunday we were able to spend the afternoon at the house of Cedric and Alexine Moss.  Cedric is the pastor of Kingdom Life Church.  Both events were great opportunities to get to know some of the people from the church we have been attending.  We have found a real connection with the people at Kingdom Life Church, and the teaching there is so much like the teaching at the churches we attended in Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Contacting us while we are in the states

If you need to get a hold of us, you can call our MagicJack number and leave a message (under the “newsletter sign-up and contact information” tab above).  Mindy will be getting a Straight Talk number starting June 3rd (we will list that number under contact information as well).  Of course you may always email us.  We will be updating our blog while we are in the US.  So stay tuned!

THANK YOU for your support of us in our work here in Nassau, Bahamas!  We appreciate your prayers and look forward to seeing some of you over the next several weeks.  If you live in the Viroqua area, we will be at Grace Church in Viroqua on Wednesday, June 5th starting at 630pm for a meet and greet time of fellowship.  Please come and see us if you can.

…O Great God!

(posted by Mindy)

O great God of highest heaven
Occupy my lowly heart
Own it all and reign supreme
Conquer every rebel power
Let no vice or sin remain
That resists Your holy war
You have loved and purchased me
Make me Yours forevermore

I was blinded by my sin
Had no ears to hear Your voice
Did not know Your love within
Had no taste for heaven’s joys
Then Your Spirit gave me life
Opened up Your Word to me
Through the gospel of Your Son
Gave me endless hope and peace

Help me now to live a life
That’s dependent on Your grace
Keep my heart and guard my soul
From the evils that I face
You are worthy to be praised
With my every thought and deed
O great God of highest heaven
Glorify Your Name through me

We sang this song in church this past Sunday, and the words speak volumes and has encouraged us this week.  We feel so humbled and blessed by the fact that God, our Creator, has chosen us, sinful and separated man, to receive salvation through Jesus Christ which has granted us a personal relationship with Him, our Creator.  Not only that, He has also saw fit to allow us to partake in His work to bring others to Himself.  What an awesome gift and responsibility!

Adventure Learning Centre and Camp Newsletter

We have been working on getting a newsletter published for the ALC this past week and a half.  It is now completed and has been disseminated   If you have not received the newsletter and would like to receive the electronic updates (they are ALC updates, not our family updates), please let us know, and we will have the ALC add you to their email list.

ALC (Camp) Facility Update

The electric upgrade continues here at camp.  The construction of the electric meter house is complete, and the electrician is working on installing electric wires and fixtures.  We are hoping the trenchers will be digging the trenches for the wiring that leads to the bathhouse and dining hall next week.

The bathhouse has a new water heater and gas tank to supply enough hot water to the 10 showers, 8 sinks, and 3 washing machines in the building.  Tim should be finishing the shower tile and grout clean-up and sealing soon.  Tom Schafer and Tim Ryan are working on putting in new stairs to the bathhouse porch and the laundry room.  They are even building me a ramp so I can pull my wagon  into the laundry room.  Thanks, guys!

We have received the go ahead from the board to finish construction on one of the unfinished cottages.  The completion of the cottage will give us a place for our female staff to live while they work here at the ALC.  We are looking forward to getting this project underway.  Please pray that God supplies the material and the labor for this project.

Ministry Update

We continue to have ALC staff and residents from the Castle over on Monday evenings to play basketball, volleyball, or ultimate frisbee before viewing an episode of the Truth Project together.   After the Truth Project and a short discussion time, we have a time of fellowship.  Truth Project night is one of the highlights of our week.

The Camp has a full schedule of mission teams for this summer.  Please pray for our stamina and wisdom as we serve these groups and for each and every team member that comes to serve on these short term mission teams.

Family Update

Hallelujah, Logan is done with his AP Calculus class and all his testing!  He completed his ACT test on April 13th, his SAT test on May 4th, and his AP Calculus test on May 8th.  Now he can focus all his time on getting his other courses completed.  Zachary is up to date and working diligently to finish up all his course work early.  We are quite proud of these guys for what they have been through this year.  Circumstances this year have not always been conducive or ideal for learning.  Once again we thank God for His provisions to them.

Additional Prayer Requests

*Please pray for the busy summer schedule for both the camp and the centre and for all those we will be serving

*Please pray for completion of the building projects

*Please pray for the current ALC staff and that God would send us others to labor here with us

*Please pray that God provides additional monthly support for our personal expenses.  The monthly financial support that has been pledged to us remains at 43%, but even that has not come in every month, leaving us to dig deeper into savings each month.  We are not stressing about this.  God has always provided and will continue to do so.

*Please pray for Garrett as he works on transfering from the University of Wisconsin to the University of Minnesota

*Mindy’s knee still remains an issue, and although we are praying for healing, we are also praying for wisdom as to what to do about it.  We plan to seek help next week if God chooses not to heal it.  We really do not want to deal with the Bahamian medical system (but don’t want to have to pay USA medical prices either).  Please pray for healing and wisdom.

*Please pray for us as we anticipate our trip back to the states at the end of this month.  We have a very full, tight schedule for the whole time we are there (updating a couple churches on our work here, visiting a couple churches about possible mission trips here, and speaking to another church about supporting us).  Tim will be returning to the island on June 11th, Mindy and the boys will be returning on July 3rd (Mindy will be camp nurse at LWBC for high school camp at the end of June and the boys will be attending camp that week).  Garrett will be coming back with us in July for a two week visit.
